Before the original 5 X-men came to the present, the present time Angel was completely taken over by his Archangel persona. He almost succeeded in taking over the world but was stopped in time by X-Force, the secret mutant black ops squad led by Wolverine. Psylocke used a life seed to kill Archangel and in the process, Angel reverted back to his former self without any of his past memories.
