Doctor Octopus took control of Spider-man’s body, and trapping the latter’s consciousness into his own dying body. With Peter Parker’s last attempt to regain control of his body failed, he used his mind connection with Otto Octavius to bombard him with all his memories and experiences, making Otto understand that with great power comes great responsibility. Before he died, Peter made Otto promise to uphold the legacy of Spider-man and to protect his family. Otto accepted the dying man’s wish and declared himself to be the Superior Spider-man.
