Aquaman makes interesting points about Atlantis and the United States. Not all countries have the full support of their citizens, even if it’s an ancient civilazation like Atlantis. It makes for a believable extra struggle for Aquaman’s role as king and makes his story more engaging. We have too many superheroes who go and beat up the bad guys and call it a day in the end. With Aquaman, it’s a juggling act between learning how to be a monarch and be a superhero.
