David Bond, later known by the codename Hijack, discovers he is a mutant with the ability to control technology. When police officers caught him testing his powers on a fleet of cars, they attempted to arrest him. However, fearing his abilities, they shot at him, intending to kill him. Magik and the Stepford Cuckoos arrived just in time, using a portal created by Magik to save him. The psychic Cuckoos prevented David from feeling the pain of being shot, while Magik scared away the police and David’s ex, who had outed him as a mutant to save herself.
They transported David to the New Charles Xavier School for Mutants, where Cyclops’s faction of the X-Men was hiding. There, they healed him and welcomed him to the X-Men, officially recruiting him into their ranks.
