The Sovereign managed to capture Wonder Woman after wearing her down with constant battles against super villains, the final and most brutal being with Grail, daughter of Darkseid. He bound Wonder Woman’s arms with the Lasso of Lies and tried to mentally break her down, quoting Bible verses and making her imagine a life of servitude under a verbally abusive Steve Trevor.
Just as she is about to mentally break from the torture, her mother, Queen Hippolyta, appears in the fantasy world in her mind and reminds her that she has broken every rule Hippolyta ever gave her, so she shouldn’t let that stop her from destroying the Lasso of Lies just because Hippolyta once told her it was unbreakable. With this encouragement, Wonder Woman unravels the lasso and breaks free, attacking the Sovereign and taunting him, asking if he has any other toys she can break.
